Why is it when we think of the piano it is always men at the forefront?
“Sing us a song, you’re the piano man…” Elton John, Billy Joel, Ben Folds, Tim Minchin: But where are the piano women? An exploration into the unknown stories of historic women pianists, from a successful Australian piano woman, Emma Knights.
The Piano Men (Pianodrome) is a look at the history of the piano and its women throughout history as well as a sharing of my own experiences as a female pianist without diminishing the works of the piano’s men. Part concert/part cabaret, The Piano Men, is a journey through time and genres and hopes to inspire young pianists to pursue their passions in music.
The Piano Men premiered in Edinburgh Fringe in 2018 and has been developed further with sell-out performances in the Adelaide Fringe in 2019. The show received 4.5* and 5* reviews which you can read below:
“Talent just oozes from her fingers” ★★★★★ – Sam About Town

The Piano Men is written and performed by Emma Knights. It is my debut one-woman show after many years of music directing and playing the piano for others. If you are in Edinburgh this August you may also like to see The Piano Women the follow-up show to The Piano Men. Emma Knights Productions has been granted a Made in Adelaide Award from Arts SA and the Government of South Australia to attend the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019.
*The Pianodrome is an amphitheatre constructed entirely from up-cycled pianos and believes that no piano is junk and that no person is unmusical.
**Please note this performance is in Edinburgh, Scotland. Please view the calendar for future performances in Australia.
